What happens to skin submerged in water for long periods of time?

Does it die? Why does this happen? How long does it take? What are the benefits of being submerged in water if you are the victim of burns?|||Skin oils tend to wash out, and the cells expand, causing that wrinkling effect. But the water insulates the skin from the oxygen in the air and hydrates it, which is why it%26#039;s a good thing for burn patients.|||Water will move into cells due to osmosis and cause swelling. I assume water will rehydrate some of the cells that survived burning and allow regeneration.

These are my assumptions, so I can%26#039;t tell for sure!
